Promoting Inter-Art Relations
We advocate Martial Arts training as one aspect of a balanced, life-long pursuit of physical,
mental and spiritual health. We are active in promoting of good citizenship and community within all arts. Other Arts
organizations, their instructors and practitioners are not viewed as competition, but rather as our extended, and honored
family.
With
that being said we would like to extend an invitation to all W.M.A.F. schools to an open Black
Belt work-out that we will be having every Wednesday night at Pence Self-Defense at

Mugger foiled by blind judo expert
Reuters | Tuesday, 11 September 2007
A blind judo expert has astounded a mugger by pinning him
to the ground after he tried to steal his cigarettes in Germany.
The assailant, a 17-year-old man of Asian origin, spotted the 33-year-old,
who police identified only as Emil E, at a train station in the southwestern town of Giessen and thought he would be easy
prey, police spokesman Rolf Wellershausen said.
But what the attacker did not know, the spokesman said, was that
his victim was a world-class blind judo wrestler.
The 17-year-old threatened the blind man, then punched him in the
face, at which point the martial artist flipped him and held him down until police arrived.

Kubaton Seminar
to learn street smart self-defense for both men and women!
The "Kubaton" or Pocket Stick is a clever addition to our keychain.
While the kubaton looks like an ordinary keychain, it's one of the most overlooked, effective, practical, inexpensive legal
personal protection devices .
They are great for jabbing, pressure points and gouging. Measuring 5 inches in length, it’s
long enough where you can use your keys as a weapon by snapping or side lashing them against an assailant without your hand being
injury. Mr. Pence shows you how to use the pocket stick against various strikes, grab and holds. His
comprehensive drills train you to use the pocket stick rapidly and accurately, create your muscle memory. Sensei teaches in
a way that's fun and easy to learn. Get the average over the bad guy!
DATE = Wednesday January 17, 2007 TIME = 7:30 p.m. "On the Nose"
CLINIC COST = $20.00 INCLUDES KOUBATON
PLACE = Pence Self-Defense
Kubotan Q & A
The self-defense Kubaton
keychain is discrete, unassuming, and convenient. If the Kubaton keychain is used properly, it can dramatically
increase the odds of surviving from a life-threatening assault. The best part of the Tool is... it is the
most common thing that you carry in your hand when coming or going from your vehicle, home or your work . You carry your keys
in your day-to-day life on the Kubaton as a keychain, therefore you will have it in your hand more than any other object.
Never forget,
your brain is your primary tool for staying safe, not a keychain. Your mental, and physical development
determines your ability to avoid, detect and to deal with danger effectively when it does arise.
The kubotan has its limitations. The keychain is just one more tool
in your "self-defense tool box." In dealing with opponents under the influence of alcohol or drugs, both their
pain threshold and adrenaline responses will be different. Some may not react to pain at all. In addition, opponents
with serious mental health problems often fail to react normally to pain.
The self-defense techniques with the kubotan are extremely simple.
They work by trapping the nerves between the two hard surfaces, these being the stick and one of the opponent's bones.
When carried out properly, pain is excruciating but, leaving no lasting injury. Impact points suitable for the kubaton
run along the spine, many over the chest, and solar plexus, as well as pressure points along the arms and legs. Other, more
damaging points include the throat, eyes, and groin - but there are no guarantees that using the kubaton into these
locations will not leave some permanent injury.
The kubaton can be used as a jabbing or striking weapon.
It has two different usable impact surfaces: the keys and the shaft. The kubaton can be delivered underhand or overhand while
strikes can be delivered using a swing or jabbing technique. These techniques include Jab with Keys, Jab with Shaft, Underhand
Swing with Keys, Overhand Swing with Keys, Underhand Swing with Shaft, Overhand Swing with Shaft, and so many more.
F.A.Q.
1. Will it be immediately
available when I need it? YES
2. Is it legal to carry?
YES
3.Will I carry it all
the time? YES
4 Is it all I will ever need
to defensed myself? NO,its just a good tool!
Lastly...
"The more you
work in here, the less you bleed on the out there".

Filipino Martial Arts Seminar Tuhon
(Grandmaster) Jerson "Nene" Tortal Wednesday, November 8, 2006
With a sense of gratitude and humility the students
of Pence Defense where given an early Christmas present when Tuhon Nene visited the school on Wednesday. We all stood with
jaws dropped at his lightnening fast moves and flexibilty. Not bad for a man of almost 70 years old. Tuhan Nene ended the
night with some words of wisdom for the guys to take home. He said we should all learn from eachother, never critisize and
always carry a big knife. (lol)

Guro May Williams
Guro May Williams was born
on May 20, 1970 in the small village of Negros. She is the youngest child with four brothers and one sister. May graduated
from the University of Negros Occidental Recoletos Philippines with a degree in secondary education. May
commenced her studies in the martial arts at the age of ten years old. At that age she didn’t know that what she was
learning was martial arts. “They called it ‘Bastonanay’ which means stick fighting. The footwork
was called ‘Atras Abante’ which means front step forward and backward.” May recalls that they used
to practice in the backyard. They made a little arena out of coconut palm leaves. Children and adults were given this task;
otherwise there would not have been a place to train. May started learning from the late Grandmaster Porferio Ronquillo, a
World War II veteran. The style he taught was called Espada Y Daga and his instruction included Judo. In
1996, while May was waiting for the teachers’ board result, she worked temporarily at a hotel where she met her future
husband Michael (Mike). He was attending a martial arts camp in Negros. The following year they were married. At that point,
May started training seriously and since then has accompanied Mike on all his martial arts travel. In 1998, Mike and May
established the Martial Arts Research Institute (MARI) - Arts of Southeast Asia in Salem, Massachusetts.
They teach:
-
Pencak Silat, which is the Harimau Pasaman Minangkabau style of West Sumatra under Guru Edward
Lebe.
-
Kuntao Silat of Bapak Willem and Ibu Joyce deThouars and Wes Tasker.
-
AMOK! Knife fighting (founder Tom Sotis).
-
Arnis-Kali-Escrima under Grandmaster Jerson Tortal; Grandmaster Remy Presas, Grandmaster Abraham
Gubaton and Grandmaster Sabas Gubaton.
-
They also teach traditional Chinese Kung Fu.
May is a certified instructor in Southwest Asian Martial
Arts, Dekiti Tirsia Siradas Kali, Oido de Caburata, assistant instructor and East Coast contact of Baringin Sakti Pencak-Silat,
student of Bapak Willem and Ibu Joyce de Thouars and Wes Tasker, and a student of AMOK! Knife fighting, and is also a student
of both Sifu Jim Roselando and Sifu Henry Mui of Pin Sun Wing Chun. Mike and May continue
researching, training and traveling. They teach many seminars at different schools and camps throughout New England. Every
two years, MARIorganizes a training trip to Southeast Asia. Mike and May have been hosting these trips for the past nine years.
The trips have always been successful, fun and memorable. MARI’s goals are to share their experiences, the unique culture
and art through these trips to camps in Southeast Asia. Upon completion of the touring martial arts camp, May stays a few
extra months to spend time with her family. She trains daily with her teachers that live nearby. It
is May’s honor and pleasure to be able to continue to learn and gain more knowledge so as to be able to teach students
outside of the Philippines with the same humility and pride towards the art as her teachers demonstrate. May strives to do
her best to teach the same way as her teachers. Currently, Guro May Williams teaches at a
pre-school and runs the Martial Arts Research Institute with her husband. In regional competitions, her students have taken
the first, second and third place trophies for Pencak Silat. Aside from traditional training for children and adults, May
is working with medical experts to develop a program specifically for children and adults with learning disabilities and Attention
Deficit Disorder.

chosen to represent Martial Arts at the 1963 World’s Fair.
After
retiring from the Railroad Police, Soke DePasquale served as corporate security director for several large corporations prior
to launching his own company called International Protection Systems Inc. As a whole, the company provided the business community
of New Jersey with excellent service, including, Investigations, Consulting, and Uniformed Professional Security Officers
Service. Soke"D" is a member of many professional organizations including the Fraternal Order of Police, American Society

Very sad news from Lathen, Germany . . .
It is with heavy hearts that we must inform you that Ernest Lieb and Charles Krum were involved in the
high-speed German train crash and did not survive. Also killed were Mattheas Augustijn, and Dagmar (Daggi) Wichterich
who were German A.K.S. students. Sensei Lieb and Sgt. Krum were to attend a seminar hosted by the A.K.S. in Germany.
LATHEN, Germany - A high-speed magnetic train traveling at nearly 125 mph crashed
Friday (September 22nd) in northwestern Germany, killing 23 people in the first fatal wreck involving the high-tech system,
officials said.
The train, which runs primarily as a demonstration by its manufacturer, struck a maintenance vehicle
that was carrying two workers on the elevated track. Mangled wreckage hung from the 13-foot-high track, with seats and other
debris strewn below.
Police put the death toll at 23 after a search of the crash site, about a half-mile from the station
at the village of Melstrup. Officials also reported 10 people were injured.
The train runs four days a week on the
20-mile test track between Doerpen and Lathen near the Dutch border. The maintenance car was regularly used to check and clear
the elevated tracks of branches and other debris. The passengers were believed to be employees and their friends
and relatives.
Please pray for the families and friends of these dear people.

on Spring break to perform two demonstrations of Ping Shen Tao. With the direction of their head instructor
Sensei Kevin they showed the students the various techniques of modern and ancient times including Classic Kata, Ping Te,
Kali twin baston, and even a special Bully prevention skit (that the Demo team students put together themselves) which
brought the students to their feet. Sensei Kevin opened the floor for Q and A and the kids loved asking all kinds
of questions about the history of the arts . The Principal and staff couldn't thank them enough and appreciated the Shaolin
wooden bead bracelets that where given to all as tokens of good will.

What is Kali ?
Kali is an ancient Philippine martial art, which is known by other names, such as Escrima and Arnis. By the 16th Century,
Kali was a highly developed, warrior art which was used against the invading Spanish. Primarily a weapon based art, Kali is
a complete defense system. Kali features rapid-fire hand strikes along with elbows, knees, disarms, throws, and
locks. Emphasizing continuous flow and sensitivity skills over strength, it is a HIGHLY functional Art and will make any system
more whole!
Going... going.... Gone!
But, "I'II BE BACK"!
Well this is it ....my adventure in South East. Asia.... Jakarta Indonesai : Negros and Manila,
Pillippines. will begin Friday the 7th of Oct. . The cultural and historical side of the trip Alone is
almost as exciting as the training we will recive from some of the worlds most respected martial arts masters!
While I am gone, I will ask of each of you to not only trian as hard as I will be, but to
also take a hard look at the knowlegde that you have at present.
Testing a memorized set of movements, is not good enough, that you
own the movement. , that is what I am looking forin my students. I,
can feel when the students have a movement in their body To get to that point it takes one thing.... work, work,
work, and then when you are done more work ! The Dojo will be open ,just as always , so make sure you get here and "work it".
Know that you will all be with me in my Travels!
Wish me luck!

FOR ALL THAT YOU MADE ME THINK ABOUT ...THANKS
On October 7, 1998 at 2:50pm, the martial arts world
lost one of the greatest leaders of our times. Professor Cerio passed away R.I.P. I remember coming in to the Dojo and seeing
a picture of the Prof. set up (in the front of the "back Dojo"at Master Carozzi's) with 10 candles all lit-up. I, like
many had not known he was sick, as I had only met him a few times at seminars and tourneys. It was a short time later that
I came to find a new hunger in my quest for knowledge in the Arts , I feel much of it is because I saw how young Prof. was
when he passed and wanted to taste as much as I could before life caught up with me as it has a way of doing at the worst
times!
Ironically 7 years later on the same day On October 7
2005 , I will leave for Training for two weeks in South East Asia. To not only experience the culture but to learn authentic
arts with the grandmasters of some of the oldest arts in the world.
A Good friend of mine asked me not to long ago
.... Why? , why do you want to go there?! What can you learn there that you can't learn here in the U.S.A.?
I simply said... It's something I have to do, and if
not now, when?

kick-a-thon
In a unique "Kick-A-Thon" held last week at Pence Self-Defense 226 Cambridge st Burlington Ma.
Karate students of all ages received pledges from family, friends and sponsors to raise money for the . Pledges for the
Kick-A-Thon were made on a "kick per minute" basis. Many of the talented students performed over 50 kicks a minute.
Sensei Kevin's thanks go to all the familys that helped to make this event a great one. A total
of $1,425 was raised from Pence Self-Defense alone and will given to the Chuck Norris Kick Start at the evening show in R.I.,
on the 9th of April 2005 .This donation will be presented as one W.M.A.F. donation COMBINING all of our schools. The amount
of funds raised will be announced that night!
The top student who brings in the most money will receive a Chuck Norris Kick-Start jacket.
All the schools who held an event will be able to be included in the W.M.A.F. pictures we take with Chuck Norris.
(Winner) Top $$$ student - Mike Lowe (Shodan) 1st deg. black belt.
Where does the money
go?
The overwhelming problems resulting from tobacco, alcohol, other drug abuse, youth violence and
gangs in our country are staggering. In the inner-city schools and in many suburbs, the drug and gang-related peer pressure
is at an all time high. It is evident that there is very little family structure, little or no guidance and direction for
the youngsters, and often no positive role models, even at the schools. Our youth are conditioned for failure, feel there
is no future for them and have often lost all sense of hope. Their sense of value for life itself is often non-existent.
KICKSTART's primary target population is inner-city youngsters, but the program is currently
also meeting the needs of students in various environments. The program generally begins on the elementary and/or sixth grade
level. Currently, the participants in the program include Hispanics, African Americans, Asians, and Caucasians.
The extent of America's problems with its youth is enormous. The Foundation's goal is to be part
of the solution to the problem. It costs an estimated $50,000 per year per youngster to be in a detention center or jail.
It costs less than $500 per child to be in our program. KICKSTART, with the help of all Americans, can
make a difference for our children's future.
Pence Self-Defense is emphasizing character education and the fundamental beliefs of Martial
Arts, Pence Self-Defense builds a strong foundation for youths to grow upon. We strive to set new and demanding standards
for innovative programming, compassionate and inspiring teaching.

Martial Arts History Museum plans For 2006 Grand Opening In 1999, the Martial Arts History Museum project began. First, an official Martial Arts Hall of Fame was created to
launch the museum. The museum was a brainchild of kung fu pioneer Michael Matsuda. "I felt that
we were losing our history, our traditions. I felt that the martial arts, which in some cases are thousands of years old,
should have a museum to keep our history alive," notes Matsuda. "In the last 50 years, the martial arts has made a dramatic
impact on America and the world. Many of these pioneers are still alive, but all will be forgotten if we don't do something
to preserve our history." Our goal is to create and launch the museum in 2006. We are working
closely with the City of Los Angeles to secure a location on Wilshire Blvd., on Museum Row and this looks like its going to
happen. The Martial Arts History Museum is not a "who's who of the martial arts" but it is an accurate
accounting of the history of the martial arts and those pioneers who have contributed to the spread of the arts. It will have
tons of artifacts including uniforms, weapons, shields, championship belts, trophies, hitting pads, Chinese dragons, drums,
utensils, mats, all that is involved in the martial arts. It will also have a variety of section on martial arts in the media,
films, cartoons, etc. In addition, the museum will have a variety of exhibit every few months focusing on kickboxing,
Ed Parker's system, the UFC, the tournament champions, etc. "The goal of the museum is to focus on the
history, but have enough exhibits to include everything about the martial arts so nearly everyone has their artifacts in the
museum at one time or another," adds Matsuda. One of the main areas is the official Martial
Arts Hall of Fame. This will be a huge wall to will be updated each year. The nominees and inductees are selected by
the Hall of Famers themselves in a huge voting process. Each year, the museum holds the Hall of Fame
Ceremony in Los Angeles as 10 new individuals are inducted into the official Hall of Fame. The
Martial Arts History Museum is a non-profit organization and all donations and Museum Memberships are tax-deductible.

FT. MYERS, FL—Peter Urban, father of American goju-ryu karate and Black Belt’s 2004 Man of the Year, died at his
home here April 7, 2004. The cause of his death was listed as kidney failure. Urban led a storied life. Born in Jersey City,
New Jersey, in 1934, he started training in jujutsu when he was 9. He subsequently took up boxing as a teen-ager, but while
serving as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Navy, his passion for the Japanese martial arts resurfaced, and he started
training in goju-ryu.
During the course of his eight-year military stint in Japan, the young officer had an opportunity to train with the likes
of Richard Kim, who subsequently introduced Urban to Mas Oyama. Oyama, in turn, introduced his new pupil to Gogen "The Cat"
Yamaguchi. By the time the American returned to New Jersey, he had earned a fifth-degree black belt in goju-ryu and was ready
to introduce the system to his fellow Americans. Urban proclaimed himself America’s first 10th-degree black belt, which
stirred up considerable controversy in the martial arts community, recalled Los Angeles-based karate expert Don Warrener.
"He was put down by a lot of people in the 1970s because of his original thinking and his nonconformity. He did his own thing;
he thought for himself."
Naysayers aside, Urban’s original thinking and kindness nurtured many aspiring martial artists. His first student
(and black belt), Edward Verycken, started training with the goju-ryu expert in 1961 when he was just 18. Now a 10th degree
in the system, he credits Urban with keeping him and many other students out of trouble. Some also credit the late master
with having developed the point system now used in martial arts competitions as a means of keeping kids under control, he
said. "To me, he was like a second father; he kept me straight," Verycken said. "There’s not a better teacher
around for the true martial arts." Toward the end of his illness, Urban promoted several 10th-degree black belts to ensure
that his system would continue, he added. Chinese-goju founder Ron Van Clief had a similarly inspiring story to tell: "I met
Master Urban when I was 17 years old, going into the military. He gave me my first look at the karate side of the martial
arts, and he was the best teacher I’ve had so far."
According to Oriental World of Self- Defense founder Aaron Banks, a giant has passed. "But as far as I’m concerned,
a giant still lives," he said. If he were still alive, Urban would probably accept his students’ appreciation, then
insist that they are the ones who deserve the credit for their success in the arts.
"Peter Urban’s best line—of all the ones he ever used, and he used thousands— is about enlightenment,"
Warrener said. " ‘Enlightenment is realizing the fact that you and I and everyone else are looking for someone to save
us from ourselves. And enlightenment is realizing that the someone you’re looking for is yourself.’ " |

June 2003, PENCE DEFENSE KEMPO DOJO NOW Offering yoga
What is yoga?
The name yoga comes from an ancient Sanskrit word that means "union
or one". Yoga is a science that was developed many hundreds of years ago in India to help unite man's body, mind and spirit.
Its goals are physical health, mental alertness and spiritual peace. A
system of gentle, stress-free postures, stretches, balancing positions,
breathing, relaxation, and meditation practices. Yoga postures are exercises, which promote control of muscles and balance.
It's an excellent way to loosen your body and become more relaxed. Yoga exercises take little time to do. Most postures take
only a minute or less.
What is meditation?
The word meditation comes from the sanskrit word "medha"
which means "doing the wisdom". Meditation is a special way of finding the quiet. Place inside yourself. It helps you to be
calm and peaceful. Through meditation, you learn to control your thoughts. By applying simple techniques, you will be able
to focus your thoughts in one place. Therefore, your thoughts become more orderly and creative.

INDIAN MAN SETS RECORD
MUMBAI,
INDIA—Bibhuti Nayak,36, a free-lance journalist from Orissa, India, broke two Guinness world records here July
13, 2002. Already a record-holder for completing 819 backhand push-ups in one hour, his first feat entailed executing 133
palm push-ups in one minute. That accomplishment surpassed the British record of 116 push-ups set by Paul Dean in 2000.

from its roots in pre-revolutionary Shanghai through its modern-day incarnation in Hong Kong. Mission Impossible 2 director
John Woo will chair the project. Classics such as The One-Armed Swordsman are among the 11 films that will be featured. All

FAD IS NOT FASHIONABLE IN JUDO
UTSUNOMIYA, JAPAN—Officials of the Tochigi Prefecture Junior High School Sports Federation recently banned six
students from participating in a judo competition here because their shaved eyebrows intimidated other competitors. The students—five
girls and one boy—were reportedly following a fashion trend of shaving and plucking their eyebrows to create a thin
line. In accordance with tournament rules, officials decided that the look gave them an unfair advantage, and they were disqualified. In
addition to altered eyebrows, the federation also prohibits competitors from coloring their hair, wearing hair ribbons and
piercing their bodies.
HOWARD JACKSON KO’S

TARZANA, CA—Former karate champion Howard Jackson appears to be winning his battle against

History was made again !
"If we close our minds to new ideas, we become stagnant"
It is commonly agreed that martial arts as we know it, took its roots from the teachings Shaolin but how did
the art of kempo that we study today get here to New England. Well this past week four of my instructors and I went to meet
the man himself Great Grand Master Pesare
GM shared many memories and we watched video and 8mm from Prof. Cerio as a white belt (he even looked good
then!) to all of the Prof. of today as 1st.deg. black belts . He spoke of the style of training as not for the "faint of heart"
and that the training was as hard for the women as it was for all 18 or 80. sometimes they trained in their socks for lack
of heat in the dojo, they trained in white gi's because there were no black ones yet in the U.S. . He spoke of the lack of
dojo (other arts) in the New England area. He also talked about the spinning back kick that he developed "people just had
never seen it before". GM also told us about the old rank system of white, green, purple, brown, black. His rent was $30 a
mo. for the first dojo he opened in 1963. I ask him to tell us all about how he found his master and about the teachings of
his master Sonny Gascon. As luck would have it he was working with a man named Alan Newton who was taking kempo at that time.
He went with Alan one night to see what it was all about. One of GM Gascon's first words to him was do you think you are you
good enough! So it began!
One of the last black belts to be made by GM Emperado, was a young man named Victor (Sonny) Gascon. In 1965
and moved to Pasadena, California where he renewed his friendship with Edmund Parker, with who he had grew up in Hawaii. John
Leoning, a black belt of Emperado, asked Sonny to teach at a school he would be opening in Burbank, California. One night
during a workout, three black belts from the Hawaii school visited with a message. They informed Mr. Gascon that they did
not have permission to use the KJUKENBO name or patch because they were not paying the required percentage to the dojo in
Hawaii. Sonny asked the three black belts in for a workout but they declined saying they were just passing along
this message. This began Sonny's departure from KAJUKNEBO and martial arts POLITICS. Sonny soon replaced the
old patch with the KARAZENPO-GO-SHINJUTSU logo patch
The type of training conducted was much like the old school in Hawaii with some twists. Mr. Gascon would
then have them sit and turn out the lights, kumite in the dark using the senses available. Using bare fists they would spar
till one of them went to the floor. every three months or so they would gather at Griffith Park in Los Angeles at 5 am. They
would start by performing their kata's in unison, practicing until all moved as one. The school closed in 1963 and Sijo Gascon
returned to Hawaii in 1969 this began Pesare's start on his own moving back to RI. In 1963 he opened his own school in Olneyville,
Rhode Island. From this school would come black belts that would eventually open dojo's across the United States and World.
Grand Master name for his style is Kaito Gakko (school of schools) from this dojo came what we know as kempo today. It is
important to know the history of our art. "If we forget where we came from, how do we know where we are going."
"Keeping with the traditions of our lineage we pass on our history and teach to keep our minds open, so that
we can grow as kempo-ka and pass it on to the next masters to teach their students".
WE THANK HIM FOR THE ART THAT HE HAS GIVEN TO ALL OF US AND FOR HIS UNDYING WILL TO SHARE THE HISTORY WITH
US EVEN NOW!
HIT!!!.... THE BOOKS!!!! ITS THAT TIME AGAIN WHEN SCHOOL STARTS. FOR MOST PEOPLE THIS SOUNDS LIKE A PAIN, BUT IT MUST BE LOOKED AT AS JUST ANOTHER CHALLENGE FOR US TO DO WELL AT. WHEN I SEE MY STUDENTS WORKING HARD IN THE DOJO TRYING TO REMEMBER THE NEXT MOVE OF THAT KATA OR ANIMAL PING-TE. MY HOPE IS THAT THE SAME PASSION FOR LEARNING CARRIES OVER FOR THERE ACADEMICS AS WELL. AS
A STUDENT OF KEMPO AN
EDUCATION SHOULD BE AT THE FRONT OF THE LINE OF ALL YOUR PRIORITIES. SO MAKE SCHOOL THIS YEAR LIKE KARATE BELT TEST WORK HARD TO SHOW YOUR OTHER TEACHERS WHAT A GOOD STUDENT I KNOW YOU CAN BE !
PICTURE DAY
TUSE. NOV 5TH @ 530pm IS PICTURE DAY THIS IS A GREAT WAY FOR YOU TO SHOW YOUR WHOLE FAMILY
YOUR ART EVEN IF THEY CAN'T COME TO SEE YOU HERE AT THE DOJO & IT MAKES A GREAT HOLIDAY CARD,MOUSE PAD, OR BASEBALL
STYLE CARD! THIS TIME AROUND WE DECIDED TO DO SCHEDULED TIME SLOTS FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS CONVENIENCE. IT WILL GO MUCH
SMOOTHER THIS WAY. THERE ARE STILL TIME SLOTS LEFT, SO CALL BY TO PUT YOUR NAME IN FOR A SLOT, ALSO AT 7:00 WE WILL
TRY TO GET A GROUP PHOTO OF THE WHOLE SCHOOL TOGETHER. MARK THIS DATE AND TIME SO THAT YOU DONT MISS OUT ON BEING A PART OF
THE SCHOOL PHOTO FOR 2002.
INTERNET BLACK BELT NORTH ANDOVER, MARandall
Sanchez, a student based in Heredia, Costa Rica, has used the Internet to earn a second-degree black belt in kyusho jitsu
from a martial arts master based here.
Evan Pantazi, a sixth-degree kyusho jitsu black-belt instructor, has never met
Sanchez face to face, although they spent more than two years together online. The 26-year-old Costa Rican martial arts teacher
took part in cyber lessons two or three times a week, Pantazi said.
"I dont know if its been done anywhere else before,
but its the first time something like this has been done in our system," Pantazi said. "Id videotape myself working here and
send it. Hed ask me a question, [and then] Id send him a written answer and a drawing and another video clip over the Internet."
Pantazi
plans to visit Costa Rica in the near future to present seminars to Sanchez and his students.
MARTIAL ARTIST STOPS A ROBBERY Last November
Steve Swyhart,a green belt student foiled a robbery at a local Stop-N-Go convenience store. Swyhart had stopped at
the convenience store after class and was still wearing his uniform (no belt). He entered the store and noticed that several
people had gathered in the back. A man stood near a magazine rack. Swyhart walked past the man, who spun around with
a pistol in his hand. "I didnt think," Swyhart said. "It just happened like we train in class." He avoided the muzzle and
pushed the weapon aside, then grabbed the barrel and twisted the pistol and locked the gunmans finger in the trigger guard.
The man immediately dropped to his knees and screamed in pain. Swyhart said he heard some "cracking and popping" before he
ripped the gun from the gunmans grasp. The martial artist then held the moaning robber at bay until police arrived. The
entire incident was caught on the video system. The gunman is being held for attempted manslaughter, for having pistol-whipped
the clerk and for stealing $75 from the store.
IRISH KENPO MASTER PASSES AWAY Kenpo master John McSweeney
the Father of Irish Karate, passed away here February 26, 2002. He was 74. The cause of death was listed as a sudden, massive
heart attack that occurred while he was home. McSweeney was best-known for bringing Master Ed Parkers brand of kenpo to
Ireland in 1963. The art has since grown into one of the most widely practiced systems in that country. McSweeney received
his black belt from Parker in 1962 and was Dan Inosantos kenpo instructor. He was was chairman of the American Kenpo
Karate Association and held a 10th degree black belt. He also served in the Air Force and Navy, Army Reserve, and the Border
Patrol in Texas.
THE PASSING OF T.K.D.s GRAND
MASTER
Choi Hong-hi, the Korean general who developed the martial art of tae kwon do more than 50 years
ago and watched it attain worldwide popularity, has died. He was 83.
Mr. Choi, who became a Canadian citizen in 1977, was a longtime resident of the province of Ontario.
He returned to the Korean peninsula weeks before his death from stomach cancer in Pyongyang, North Korea.Taking
elements from the Korean art of foot fighting, called taek kyon, and Japanese karate, the self-defense art of tae kwon do
stresses physical and mental strength, discipline and humility. It is now practiced in 150 countries by as
many as 50 million students. In the United States alone, there are several million practitioners, and family participation
is growing. A demonstration sport in the 1988, 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games, it was a medal sport in the 2000 games in Sydney.
Mr. Choi was born in 1918 in what is now North Korea. Expelled from school for leading a protest against the occupying Japanese,
he was sent to study calligraphy with a tutor who wound up teaching him taek kyon. In the late 1930s, he
continued his education in Japan, where he began to study karate and eventually attained a 2d degree black belt. While in
Tokyo in 1942, he and a number of other Korean students were conscripted into the Japanese army. Returned to Korea to serve,
Mr. Choi and several comrades tried unsuccessfully to escape and join the opposition Korean Liberation Army. Imprisoned on
charges of treason and sentenced to die, Mr. Choi was freed when Korea was liberated just days before the sentence was to
have been carried out. While in prison, Mr. Choi began working on the foundations of tae kwon do.
Mr. Choi taught tae kwon do around the world, including North Korea. He also wrote ''The Tae Kwon Do Encyclopedia,'' which
has become the standard reference work for the martial art.
This story ran on page B5 of the Boston Globe on 7/13/2002.

SUNDAY 11/17/2002 MARKED A MILE STONE FOR MANY, IN THAT, MANY YEARS OF HARD WORK
WHERE FINALLY REWARDED. AT TIMES IT LOOKED LIKE ONE OR TWO MIGHT NOT MAKE IT, ALL DID. THE 5 HOUR TEST SEEMED TO FLY BY IN
KNOW TIME, (FOR ME). ALONG WITH THE TWO STUDENTS FROM MY DOJO (CORINA & TREVOR) THREE STUDENTS FROM WALTHAM (GREAT
KICKS GUYS, ALOT OF HEART IN WALTHAM)AND ONE FROM THE PEABODY DOJO, DERECK. (WHO I REMEMBER TEACHING, FROM MY DAYS IN THE
PEABODY DOJO) ALL PASSED THE EXAM AND WHERE AWARDED THEIR NEXT RANK OF DAN. THIS IS A BROTHERHOOD THAT YOU WILL BE A
PART OF THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. CONGRATS!!! WHILE THIS IS A DAY THAT MARKS A MILE STONE MEET, IT SHOULD BE SAID THAT THIS IS
JUST THE BEGINNING FOR ANY SERIOUS MARTIAL ARTS STUDENT. GETTING YOUR BLACK BELT MEANS THAT YOU HAVE BECOME A (TRUE) STUDENT,AND
NOT "FINISHED WITH YOUR TRIANING". THERE IS ALWAYS MORE TO LEARN ABOUT YOUR ART AND YOURSELF. MY FAMILY AND I ARE VERY PROUD
OF YOU ALL.
CLOSE THE GAP, AND MAKE THEM

My Thanks goes out to all who supported this dojo by
coming to Ni Dai Soke DePasquale. Six dojos in the World Martial Arts Federation were represented.
From a show of the newest of combat ju jitsu to some
of the most classical Yoshitsune parasol motions, Shihan DePasquale taught from the heart and was very impressed with all
of you as was his Uke Shihan Mike Fitzgearld, who took his beating like a champ. They will both be back soon, (Time and date
T.B.A.)and looking forward to seeing how you have worked the gifts you were given. I will also be meeting with Shihan on a
regular basis,so as to better understand his system of Yoshitsune Ju Jitsu.

This month in History
Chojun Miyagi, founder of Goju Ryu, passed away
Sensei Miyagi died on October 8, 1953 at the age of 65. Following his death, four of his senior students
opened their own schools. Seiko Higa carried on as Sensei Miyagi's immediate successor. Meitoku Yagi formed the Meibukan,
while Sensei Toguchi formed the Shorei-kan, and Eiichi Miyazato formed the Jundokan. Even the greatest masters go on to pass,
but the name and way they lived is left behind to be remembered forever!

THE BIGGEST COWARDS IN THE WORLD . I DROVE BACK HOME IN TIME TO SEE THE 2nd PLANE HIT. IT WAS THE WORST THING I HAVE EVER
BEEN WITNESS TO, HOWEVER I DID NOT LET THIS STOP MY DAY, AT 1130 AM I WENT TO A PRIVATE LESSON IN PEABODY WITH MASTER
CAROZZI FOR MY OWN STUDIES AND THEN TO MY OWN SCHOOL AND TAUGHT CLASSES ALL DAY, KNOWING THAT IF I CLOSED,(LIKE MANY
OTHER BUSINESSES HAD) THEN THEY WOULD HAVE GOTTEN WHAT THEY WANTED, TO BREAK OUR SPIRITS TO SLOW US DOWN AND TO MAKE US FEAR
THEM. WHAT THEY DID NOT KNOW IS HOW IT WOULD BRING US ALL TOGETHER AS A NATION.THE FLAG STARTED FLYING EVERY WHERE THE VERY
NEXT DAY. ONE OF MY FAVORITE SAYINGS IS FEAR NO MAN BUT RESPECT ALL. LET'S NOT FORGET WHAT HAPPENED THAT DAY BUT

EVERY SEPTEMBER THE DOJO SEES A SPURT OF NEW PEOPLE. I HAVE ALWAYS LOOKED TO MY EXISTING STUDENTS
TO HELP MAKE THE NEW PEOPLE FEEL AT HOME AND SAFE. IT IS JUST AS IMPORTANT FOR THE SENIOR STUDENTS TO TEACH BY EXAMPLE THE
ETIQUETTE OF THIS DOJO SOME OF THE VERY BASICS INCLUDES; Always bow when entering or leaving the dojo; Remove your shoes before
entering; Speaking quietly and maintaining an attitude appropriate for serious practice.Never throwing your belt on the ground.
Giving back to the arts is a must for all serious students, and helping
a white belt can be a very reward feeling. Ask Sensei what you may do to make this Dojo a better place FOR ALL who train here.
"To help others, not just yourself this is the way of Shaolin.

Your visit to South Church Day School was terrific. The children
enjoyed the demonstrations which included board breaking, sword display, and a show of kata. It was fun for the children to
watch all the defense moves. The children at our school are very young so they particularly enjoyed the hand moves (blocks) that
Mr. Pence taught them during his visit. We are grateful that Mr. Pence and his students took the time out from their
busy schedule to delight us in this professional demonstration.

MARTIAL ARTS WORLD . IT WAS A GREAT TIME LAST YEAR W/ KIM AND BILL HE IS QUITE THE FUNNY GUY, FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DON'T KNOW
BILL WALLACE'S WIFE KIM OWNED THE BURLINGTON DOJO IN THE EARLY 90's A GREAT MARTIAL ARTIST IN HER OWN RIGHT ! BELOW IS SOME
HISTORY OF MR. WALLACE's LIFE! TO GO TO HIS WEB SITE CLICK ON ANY OF HIS PIC's.
About Bill "Superfoot" Wallace : Bill Wallace retired as
the undefeated Professional Karate Association (PKA) Middleweight Champion after defeating Bill Biggs in a 12-round bout in
June 1980. The victory, Wallace's 23rd straight, signaled the end to an illustrious 15-year career in tournament and full
contact fighting. Known to the karate world simply as "Superfoot," symbolic of his awesome left leg, which was once clocked
in excess of 60 mph, Wallace left a string of battered and bruised bodies along the martial arts fighting
trail. He used his foot as others would use their hands, faking opponents with two or three rapid fake kicks and following
with one solid knockout technique. His power was amazing, his precision astounding. Wallace, a 5-foot, 10 1/2 inch native
of Portland, Ind., began studying karate in February 1967 after suffering a right leg injury in a judo accident. The injury
left him without the use of the leg in karate competition. Some observers said Wallace was committing martial arts suicide.
Wallace, however, had other ideas. In the next seven years, "Superfoot," named after his manager saw an advertisement for
a "super foot long hot dog" at a sporting event, dominated the point-tournament circuit. As a national champion point fighter
three years in a row, Wallace captured virtually every major event on the tournament circuit. The more prestigious victories
included: the U.S. Championships (3 times), the USKA Grand Nationals (3 times), and the Top Ten Nationals (2 times).
He was such as dominant figure in martial arts that Black Belt magazine, the bible of industry publications, named him to
its Hall of Fame three times in seven years -- twice as "Competitor of the Year" and once as "Man of the Year."
In 1973, Wallace, whose education includes a bachelor's degree (1971) in physical education from Ball State University and
a master's degree (1976) in kinesiology (the study of human movement) from Memphis State University, suffered what many considered
a career-ending injury. However, one of Wallace's friends, the late Elvis Presley, flew in a Los Angeles acupuncturist to
treat the Karate champion at Graceland Manor. A year later, Wallace turned professional and captured the PKA middleweight
karate championship with a second-round knockout (hook kick) of West German Bernd Grothe in Los Angeles. He relinquished the
crown in 1980, undefeated and respected around the world.
Despite his retirement, Wallace continues to be one of the martial arts most popular figures. He is the author of three books:
Karate: Basic Concepts & Skills, Dynamic Kicking & Stretching, and The Ultimate Kick. As well as a former member of
the President's Council on Physical Fitness, Wallace also has been active in the film industry. His credits include : A Force
of One with Chuck Norris; Kill Point, with Cameron Mitchell; Continental Divide and Neighbors, with John Belushi, whom he
acted as trainer and bodyguard; Protector, with Jackie Chan; A Prayer for the Dying, with Mickey Rourke; Ninja Turf; and A
sword of Heaven.
